Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada, but was raised in the US. She's been an editor since the year 1995. She created Feminist Frequency, a site which features video and posts discussing the depictions of females in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian as well as an American feminist media critique. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit educational website which investigates representations of women in popular culture narratives. Dispelling stereotypes of women is her primary goals. However, Sarkeesian also discusses issues of specifically targeted harassment online against women and for other groups which are left out. Sarkeesian, who holds a Master's in Social and Political Thought at York University, is a sought after public speaker. She has delivered speeches at TEDxWomen's XOXO Festival and the United Nations Broadband Working Group for Gender. Passionate about issues of gender identity and feminism from the age of 7, she started her own website Feminist Frequency in 2009, while still a student at the University. It was a girl determined to make an online series which would explore gender representations in video games. However, she became victimized by online harassment. This attack was not enough to deter her. Instead, it strengthened her commitment to being a feminist and a media critic. Many awards have been presented to her as a way of acknowledging all the contributions that she made. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her role as a critic of media and founded Feminist Frequency. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit organization that explores the portrayals of women in popular culture of today.
